Wow, I just downloaded a design late last year and then the site went dark. Came back now and everything is free to download and the forums are up.
Great work!! I really hope this takes off.
Since the forums are almost empty I thought I would throw something out there by asking what would be your recommendation for progressing through your designs. In what order should someone work through the designs. How do you recommend that progression take place? I.e. should you do a mask, then the next? Or re-do the mask multiple times until really good? What paper/card, for each design, etc.
I know I'm asking a lot but I'm just throwing questions out there. Online Origami is interesting, you look up origami classes and there are thousands of Crane videos. You search for advanced origami and you get classes to design your own crease patterns. There is nothing in between the two extremes. I think your mask designs are a great in-between as they are somewhat simple (some of the designs) yet beautiful and rewarding. But to use them as a 'course' some more context would be great.
Again, great work!!
Thats great, I'll give the first path a try. I have folded mask 3 twice before (before this forum went live) , so I'll continue with this one (another 4 tries to go). I'll keep my first and compare it with my 7th. Then I'll continue with masks 8, 9 and 25.
It depends on what the goal is of the progression. 1. If the goal is to gain a heightened awareness and intuitive understanding on how the paper distribution works in 3D space I'd recommend the following. 1a. Start with mask 8,9 or 25. 1b. Choose only one of the above mentioned designs and fold five copies. Yes five or even 7 copies. 1c. Notice how your ability to shape the design improves on copies 3-7. 1d. Once all copies are completed, revisit the first design and improve on the shaping. 1e. When you feel stuck, switch to another copy and focus on adding a unique personality to each copy. 1f. Each time you feel stuck switch to another one, repeat doing this untill satisfied. What you'll find is ones ability improves at a radical pace by folding a single design multiple times. In essence this is my exact method for creating new crease patters. I refold multiple times, create multiple variations and then convert my favorite variation to a new crease pattern and and repeat the process. It's how a tree in nature grows, branching out from the core concept. First the original idea, then the branches, then twigs, leaves, flowers and finally a seed that can then grow into its own design. Pretty cool stuff! - If the progression goal is folding multiple designs, I'd say begin with mask 19 as it's really basic. Then mask 3 then 9, 8, 25, 23, 21, 26. Preferably folding at least 2-3 of each one before leveling up to the more complicated ones. So as to build ones self confidence in this style of mask folding. Key takeaway: To improve, repetion is the mother of all skills, there's really no short cut, just gotta put on some groovy music, perhaps a podcast, print the designs and fold fold fold. Let me know if you have follow up questions. The work in progress category is perfect for sharing one's progression with the community so we can contribute and chip in with feedback, ideas.
